Embracing Joy Through Song

At OCUUC, music has always been a source of connection, reflection, and celebration. This April, as we explore the theme of Joy, our music program will bring uplifting melodies and inspiring harmonies to enrich our worship. From choral anthems to soul-stirring instrumental performances, each Sunday will offer a musical experience designed to remind us of the joy that can be found in community, resilience, and gratitude. We’re excited to feature a diverse range of musical expressions this month including beloved…

Find Joy

Did you know that “Joy” is my favorite word? Years ago, I read in Marianne Williamson’s book “A Woman’s Worth” a definition of joy that resonated: “”Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.” About this same time, a friend of mine told me she was pregnant and a wonderful feeling overcame me – a feeling that all was right with the world, because I knew she and her spouse would…

A word about the REACH

On March 26th, our Board approved a motion to suspend publication of The Reach. Although there is a small minority of members for whom The Reach remains important, we found that most people are utilizing other ways of staying connected to church activities. Also, no one stepped up to accept the role of editor for the publication. Please know that the Communication Committee is committed to enhancing our messaging and finding more effective ways to connect with all members of…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #29

Important Notice: Our contractor has notified us that the closure of the two driveways on Mesa Verde Drive will likely occur between March 31 to April 14. They will need that time to demolish the existing concrete and reconfigure it to today’s acceptable standards. During that time we will use the entrance on Adams Ave to enter and leave the property. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Work continues on the new sanctuary. Most notably is the painting of…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #28

Important Notice: Our building contractor will be making the connection to the water main this Sunday morning between 9 am and 1 pm behind the new sanctuary. It is the only time they can do it because there is a medical facility in the Torelli Real Estate building that can’t have the water shut off between Monday and Saturday. During this time the water will be completely shut off to our property. There will be upgraded portable toilets available in…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #27

Lots of activity at the construction site this week – both inside and outside. Interior walls are being prepared for primer and paint while the concrete floor has had the initial polishing. Outside the site work will start to ramp up with the storm water drain lines being placed along with irrigation lines in preparation for the eventual pavers that cover the majority of the area. Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #26

The third and final coat of stucco has been applied and it reveals the final color of the exterior walls. The windows and doors are scheduled for installation now that the stucco is completed and the metal frames have been installed. Interior work continues with a slight change in the position of the podium after conferring with Reverend Sian. Photo: The Nanawall is here! The Nanawall is here! Trust

Can you believe that I’ve been with this congregation for over 11 years? I can still remember meeting the search committee, the congregation and my first day I preached (with the youth!). I admit, the first few years were tough. I had big expectations of myself, and the congregation and I were getting to know one another. It can be a tender time: it takes time to build trust. Trust that we won’t hurt each other; trust that we will…

Our Whole Lives (OWL)

As the seasons are changing and spring is amongst us, the Religious Education Program has a few new updates. Be sure to take a peek into the classrooms as we have started re-decorating the elementary and middle school classrooms. As they are still a work in progress we are really enjoying the fun themes and we are excited to see the finished product next week. The RE program is also starting the Our Whole Lives (OWL). This is a great…

LGBTQ+ Action Group

In these times of rapid change and turmoil, many of us feel unclear about what steps we can take that could make a difference. One avenue to consider would be to support the LGBTQ+ community. Our Board Treasurer, Jamie Pendarvis, is working to re-establish our LGBTQ+ Action Group. Below is her brief overview of the situation. — Kathleen McFarlin On June 26, 2015, marriage equality became reality with a landmark 5-4 decision in the Obergefell v. Hodges case at the…

Music in Our Schools Month

Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is a nationwide celebration held every March to highlight the importance of music education in fostering well-rounded, engaged, and emotionally healthy students. Music programs provide children with a creative outlet, helping them build confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills that extend beyond the classroom. Research has shown that students who participate in music education often perform better academically, develop stronger social connections, and exhibit improved emotional well-being. By recognizing the value of music in schools,…
