Building Our Future

This past Sunday, our congregation held its Annual Congregational Meeting – a time to vote in new Board Members, approve the 2025-26 budget and to acknowledge many of our own members and staff who have worked hard to accomplish OCUUC’s goals over the past year. Dolly Duran was recognized as a congregant who has now been a member for 25 years; although she wasn’t able to attend the meeting, we’ll make sure she receives her pin to commemorate her many…

Drummers and Strummers

Do you wish that you could drum along with others in a percussion group? Or have you been looking for a reason to get that Ukulele, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Dulcimer, or some other lute-type instrument out of its case, and strum along with others? If so, Susan Shaw has created just the group for you – the “Drummers and Strummers” group. We meet on Thursday evenings, starting June 12th, in Daniels Hall at 6:30PM for rehearsals, and we will be…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #40

Following last Sunday’s Annual Meeting the new sanctuary was open for inspection by the attendees. The largest remaining task is the parking lot in which half will be partially slurry coated and the rest will receive new asphalt. Landscaping is almost completed and we’re still waiting for Edison to give final approval to turn on the electricity so we can test all the systems. Want to catch the construction action in real time? Check out the Live Sanctuary Cam here!

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #39

Installation of the pavers continues and should be finished this week in time for the congregational meeting this Sunday. Come to the meeting and test them out. The interior of the sanctuary will be viewable also. The landscaping crew has been busy planting everything according to the detailed plan. The existing monument sign has been removed and foundation work on the new sign will start soon. We’re waiting for the final electrical connection from Edison which could happen at anytime.…

Thank You

I want to extend gratitude to everyone who has supported Share Ourselves throughout my two years of internship at OCUUC. Together, we supported local youth by gathering school supplies and backpacks to underserved schools in the area. Share Ourselves provided Thanksgiving meal prep to over 500 families in Orange County and your contributions supported those efforts. Over the Christmas season, we were able to provide gifts and necessities to a family of 10 in the Adopt-A-Family program that served over…

Freedom

There is an old saying, “if you love someone, let them go.” Wendy, our Intern Minister, is leaving us this month, spreading her wings to pursue her vocation in ministry. It’s hard to let go of someone you care about, to let them pursue the next phase of their life. Our life is filled with many “letting gos.” We do it with our children as they graduate and go off to pursue their careers or college; we do it when…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #38

Picture 1: The semi-permeable pavers are being installed this week. These pavers allow rainwater to be filtered back into the ground rather than directly into the street gutter system. Picture 2: The talented crew prepares the base for the pavers while the landscapers are busy getting the plants organized and in the ground. Picture 3: A member of the audio/visual team works on the recently installed video projector in the sanctuary. The video screen is in place and it won’t…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #37

Work continues with electrical and audio/visual items along with preparing the curbing in the rear of the property for the pending asphalt work. Photo shows the progress in the courtyard area. The drainage of this space must meet strict conditions set by the city permit. It requires that rainfall must be largely contained on the property resulting in the use of semi-permeable pavers so the rainfall can percolate into the soil as opposed to the street gutter. A layer of…

Be the Change

As the Annual Congregational Meeting approaches on Sunday, June 8th, I’ve been working to complete my report which will be included in the informational booklet. This task caused me to review the past year and all the Board has accomplished – certainly not alone, but with the help of many others in the church. But I wonder how many of our members are truly aware of the Board’s work and how it impacts our community here at OCUUC? I was…

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #36

Work continues with the audio/visual components being assembled and the preparations for the pavers in the courtyard. Photo shows view of the newly stained and sealed oak hardwood raised platform in the new sanctuary. The additional wood shown is being prepared for baseboards throughout the room. The new video screen is scheduled to be installed next week. Want to catch the construction action in real time. Check out the Live Sanctuary Cam here!

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #35

Work in the new sanctuary continues with the main concrete floors being polished and sealed. Note the before and after photos to see the difference. Looks fantastic along with all the other items being completed. SoCal Edison has completed hooking up the new connection so now the builder and the subcontractors can start to test the various systems. The new entrances on Mesa Verde Drive are finished and open for use.
