UU Animal Ministry

UU Animal Ministry

“We honor the interdependent web of all existence. With reverence for the great web of life and with humility, we acknowledge our place in it. We covenant to protect Earth and all beings from exploitation.”

- UUA Article II

OCUUC's chapter of the Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry promotes and supports efforts within our church, within our community, and by individual members to reduce the suffering and honor the dignity and worth of nonhuman animals including farmed animals, pets, and wildlife.

We provide the congregation with opportunities to sign petitions regarding animal welfare and to donate food for the pets of homeless people, promote animal welfare organizations, and sponsor other activities on behalf of animals. We meet on Zoom on the second Sunday of the month at 2:30 p.m.

The national UUAM began in 1986 as Unitarian Universalists For the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and became the UUAM in 2009. There are currently about 35 chapters in the US, plus one Canadian chapter. "UUAM Chapters work to promote compassion for all species, at the local level."

There are many ways to help reduce animal suffering, from cutting plastic rings to make sure that no sea creature or bird gets stuck in them, to donating money to organizations, to writing to representatives about legislation to protect animals, to eating a plant-based diet, to being a full-time animal rights activist. Everyone can do something, even if no one can do everything.
