Did you know that “Joy” is my favorite word? Years ago, I read in Marianne Williamson’s book “A Woman’s Worth” a definition of joy that resonated: “"Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are." About this same time, a friend of mine told me she was pregnant and a wonderful feeling overcame me – a feeling that all was right with the world, because I knew she and her spouse would make such great parents. It felt like all was “right” with the world. After reading Williamson’s definition, I realized that what I was feeling was joy. Life was good!
But her definition isn’t about “rightness,” really. It’s a mixture of happiness for not just yourself, but for others and gratitude for the goodness that is in the world. I feel like these days, it’s hard to find joy. But when I look at this church, when I look at my friends and my family, I am overcome with joy. Because it is GOOD.
I invite you to find joy in your life this month – recognize it and enjoy it.
With love,
Rev. Sian
