Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #1

Sanctuary Construction Update – Week #1

Construction workers on scissor lift begin to remove walls connecting the soon-to-be-demolished building with other buildings which will remain. This work is being done by hand to minimize any potential damage to the adjacent buildings before the heavy duty excavator arrives on site to carry out the bulk of the demolition.

Following our groundbreaking event on Sunday, September 1, our contractor began the day after Labor Day (September 3) to prepare the site for demolition. Bricks and pavers in the courtyard were removed to be reused later in the project and a chain link construction fence was installed surrounding the work site. They also capped the sewer and water supply and Edison removed the electric meter, de-energizing the building. Recyclable materials, including lumber, were removed from the building. A kick-off construction meeting was held on Friday, September 6 in the Victoria Room with representatives from domusstudio architects, Hoffman & Associates construction and OCUUC's sanctuary construction committee (Nancy Loughrey, Craig Spery and Barbara Morihiro). These team meetings will take place every two weeks.
