A Year From Now?

A Year From Now?

At our last Board Meeting October 23rd, the Board considered all the changes that are happening in our church and our community. The two biggies are the pandemic and our new Sanctuary-to-be. Of course that’s just the start!

We talked about the different kinds of change:

  • short or long term,
  • technical (a solid “fix” is possible, i.e. we all need to learn to use Zoom) or adaptive (more systemic and not as possible to “fix” i.e. some people prefer Zoom and will stay online indefinitely),
  • controllable and non-controllable.

We have all of the above.

We also talked about what happens when things change and how we can lead the congregation through challenging times. The Board and Staff are often the first to experience the excitement and stress. I do love the serenity prayer - "grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” but it doesn’t go far enough. Susan Beaumont gives perspective on dealing with the challenges of change when she says “Overwhelm is an opportunity to stop and pay exquisite attention to what is emerging”. We are not going back to the “before times”. What will OCUUC look like a year from now?

We all must pay attention and stay in communication. We have lots going for us - our Fifth Principle encourages us to operate as a democracy after all, so we are listening! We have policies and standing rules in place to spot trends and address issues. Above all, we are a loving community that cares for each other and our larger community. We can do this together!
