Hanukkah is the Jewish holiday also called "festival of lights." The holiday marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE after a small group of Jewish fighters liberated it from occupying foreign forces. On eight consecutive nights, Jews gather with family and friends to light candles in a menorah (a multi-branched candelabra), followed by eating latkes (potato pancakes), singing, giving gifts, and playing the dreidel game.
Hanukkah always happens within a few weeks of Christmas. This year it starts on the night of December 25 and lasts through the night of January 2. Our Hanukkah party will be on Saturday, December 28. Food and fun for all ages, all backgrounds! The meal will be potluck; a vegan main dish and latkes will be provided. $5 donation; kids under 12 free.
