Religious Education for Children and Youth at OCUUC
Welcome! Our children describe Unitarian Universalists as the people with the “open minds, caring hearts and helping hands.”
The Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Religious Education for Children and Youth (RECY) program is designed to reflect OCUUC’s stated purpose of seeking truth, building just communities and caring for one another. Our curricula, programs and events are carefully designed to reinforce our liberal religious values. We manage to have plenty of fun along the way, too! We invite you to visit us soon.
In Gratitude~~
Rayna Hamre
OCUUC Director of Religious Education
Family Worship
Our families gather together for worship before the children and youth leave for their classroom sessions. Families may gather on our playground to greet friends and have fun before the service begins. During the service, the children remain with their families through the chalice lighting, opening song and the “Time for All Ages.” Children, youth and teachers then leave for their classrooms. Religious Education classes are held during the second service from September to June and during the single service in the summer months.
You can find the Religious Education registration form for 2011-2012 here.
Unitarian Universalist Principles Adapted for Youth:
- We believe that each and every person is important.
- We believe that all people should be treated fairly.
- We believe that our churches are places where all people are accepted and where we keep on learning together.
- We believe that each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.
- We believe that everyone should have a vote about the things that concern them.
- We believe in working for a peaceful, fair and free world.
- We believe in caring for our planet Earth.

There have been some questions in the past few weeks about the Unitarian Universalist Our Whole Lives (OWL) program. This is a life span education program to help children, adolescents and adults learn more about their bodies, their ethics and assist them in making important life decisions.
Please take some time to learn about our OWL programs. Some of our OWL graduates are now teaching OWL at their UU churches and fellowships.
From our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) web site:
“OWL addresses decision-making, clarifies values, builds interpersonal skills, and deepens understanding of spiritual, emotional and societal aspects of sexuality, which can influence the decisions we make. Its ‘three Rs’ are Responsibility, Respect, and Relationships.”

Please join us for our annual Easter Egg Hunt with our Bunny Store on Sunday April 8. This is always so much fun. Please bring a canned food item for our Share Ourselves (SOS) collection. This will allow our children to experience community giving and receiving on special days.
Our new social justice curriculum is in full swing for grades 1-6. We will be telling family stories. If your 1st-6th graders ask about family history and lore, please take some time to talk to them. This will be a learning time for all of us! This is to assist us in getting ready for Justice General Assembly in Phoenix June 2012. Please consider attending GA! www.uua.org I just made my reservation for Justice GA in Phoenix. I hope your family can join me. More information is below.

Please take the time to complete your congregational survey from our ministerial search committee. The selection of a new minister will have a huge impact on OCUUC for many years to come. See the information below. Also, the attached document is from our congregation nurse on how to talk ot parent who choose not to vaccinate their children. That choice poses a threat to public health, and Adair Small has put together valuable information for our UU parents.

ASAP. Many parents in the congregation have not yet returned their Congregational Surveys. As you know, OCUUC is beginning the important work of selecting a new minister. Critical to that process is the completion of the Congregational Survey sent to every member and friend of OCUUC. If you see Clover Behrend, please give her a big hug. She and I have caught up the tallies for our RE attendance sheets, and Clover will assist the program by keeping our attendance up-to-date in our Excel files. Thanks so much for sharing your time and talents with RE, Clover!
OCUUC is very pleased to be hosting two sessions of Our Whole Lives (OWL) this spring. OWL is designed to teach our young people about their bodies and to assist them in navigating the messages about sexuality in today’s complex world. This year we are offering OWL for grades 5-6 and for Sr. High students. Spaces are filling up so please get your youth on the list for OWL soon.
Thanks for all you do~~
